School of Isolated and Distance Education
This project involves the creation of a Yarning Circle at the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) in Leederville, WA. The development includes a thoughtfully designed outdoor learning and meeting space, seamlessly integrated into the school's landscape to enhance the natural surroundings.
Inspired by the cultural significance of the Yarning Circle, the design emphasizes inclusivity, connection, and a harmonious relationship with nature.
The project features a central concrete Yarning Circle, surrounded by natural timber log seats, providing a welcoming space for discussions and gatherings. The area is divided into six distinct gardens, each representing a different Noongar season, with carefully selected native plants that reflect the colors and flora of each period.
To maximize the connection with the environment, the design incorporates gravel and concrete pathways, corten steel edging, and a water feature that blends with the existing grass trees. Prefabricated timber tables and seats are strategically placed to offer comfortable and functional spaces for learning and interaction.
The minimalist design, with its natural materials and thoughtful layout, ensures durability and elegance while fostering a deep connection with the cultural and natural heritage of the region. The use of energy-efficient and sustainable materials further enhances the project's commitment to eco-friendliness and functionality.
